Taunggyi, the capital of the Shan States, is well known for tis hot-air balloons festival, held in November every year. The festival is a great favorite of the local people, attracting visitors to Taunggyi from all over the country. The brightly colored balloons are in the shape of different animals or anything that takes the fancy of the makers. In actual fact, they represent Lighted Lanterns sent heavenwards as subjects of worship to the Lord Buddha. Just an hour drive from the Inle Lake. Taunggyi is noted for its pleasant weather and traditional Shan food shops.
